The subject matter for landscape photography in Taiwan is incredibly diverse,
ranging from high mountains, rivers, and lakes to people, flowers, birds, and
trees. I particularly enjoy photographing Taiwan’s native cypress trees—specifically
the Taiwan Cypress and Hinoki—which are widespread across the island. The shot I call
"Eye of the Forest" came about while I was scouting for subjects within a vast
cypress forest. The area was so expansive that I wasn't sure where to focus my
lens; I simply wandered along, taking in the scenery. Carrying my camera, tripod,
and light meter—while wearing a hat and hiking boots—I began to feel a bit weary.
I came across a beautiful, wide stretch of grassy ground that looked incredibly
inviting, so I set down my gear and lay back to rest. As I gazed up at the sky,
I suddenly noticed a shape that looked like an animal staring back at me. It bore
a striking resemblance to a creature—perhaps an eagle—watching me. It created an
intriguing psychological moment: was I observing the animal, or was it observing
me? Did it see me as potential prey? I was delighted to have stumbled upon such
a captivating subject, so I quickly snapped the photo. I was worried that if I
walked away, I wouldn't be able to find the exact spot again—and to this day, I
actually don't know where I took it; I would have to look at the original film
negative to find out!If you were to walk just another 50 meters, that specific
view might well disappear. This is a highly artistic photograph that I really
enjoy sharing with everyone; I think it would look wonderful hanging in a living
room or bedroom. Beyond its artistic quality, it also allows one to experience
the beauty of the forest.
