A Film Photography Shoot That Allowed No Room for Error
When Taiwan set out to build Taipei 101—set to become the world's tallest skyscraper—there was widespread excitement and anticipation. As the project neared completion in 2004, the government was racing against the clock, and the media kept a close watch on progress. Witnessing the magnificent structure taking shape, I followed its development daily, eager to capture the grandeur of the entire engineering feat. At night, the main thoroughfare was brilliantly illuminated, and lights blazed across nearly every floor of the building as construction work continued. I decided to shoot a night scene, though I had to wait for clear weather; achieving the desired color and image quality required the cooperation of the elements. Finally, a perfect, clear day arrived. I prepared my film early in the morning and, when I set out that afternoon, I gathered the following equipment.

1. A Linhof 4x5 camera; although it is somewhat old, I am thoroughly familiar with it. It is a complex piece of equipment requiring careful safety checks at every stage of operation. At critical moments—when time is ticking away and there is no chance for a do-over—the photographer and the machine must act as one. The 4x5 camera is ideal for architectural photography, as it allows for the correction of perspective distortion in buildings. 2. A 55mm Rodenstock lens. 3. A center filter, used in conjunction with a small aperture (f/11) to ensure full image coverage across the entire film negative. 4. A cable release and a headlamp. 5. A focusing cloth and a piece of black card. 6. A sheet of Kodak 100VS 4x5 film; its vibrant color rendering makes it the best choice for night photography. 7. Two light meters: one reflective meter and one spot meter. 8. A Gitzo tripod head and a Gitzo Series 1 tripod (weighing 8 kg). A highly stable tripod capable of supporting the camera's weight is essential, as the lighting process—from the initial exposure to completion—can take several hours. During this time, the equipment must remain completely undisturbed; any movement would cause ghosting or blurriness, resulting in a failed shot.

Capturing this image of the "Project 101" site was a five-hour endeavor, requiring me to shoot continuously from dusk until I achieved the desired effect. Once the film holder was carefully inserted into the camera back and locked in place, I had to wait for the full moon on the fifteenth day of the lunar month to travel up the mountain and capture the moon itself; only then was the photographic exposure process truly complete.
This image, created using the sophisticated capabilities and precise exposure techniques of a Linhof 4x5 camera, stands as a superb example of night photography. It documents the magnificent, historic scale of the construction project. With its exquisitely soft color tones, it is a classic color photograph worthy of being a collector's piece.
