[A Chaser of Light Between Heaven and Earth: Behind the Scenes of a
Sunset at the East Peak of Hehuan Mountain]
Like those who create fine art, photographers have a profound need for
a positive state of mind and an exceptional level of emotional stability.
Only by remaining entirely focused—unswayed by the fluctuations of the
secular world, such as the rise and fall of stock prices or the price
of gold—can one devote oneself wholeheartedly to the act of artistic
creation. Yet, when I captured this image, *Sunset at Hehuan
Mountain East Peak*, I did so with the intense, all-out, "go-for-broke"
spirit of someone driven by sheer, burning dedication.

Looking back at that morning, my first instinct—as it always is—was
to check the weather. The sky was more beautiful than I could have
ever imagined; it was a rare, breathtaking spectacle, the likes of
which I had seldom seen in my life. Without a moment’s hesitation,
I grabbed my "rapid-response" gear bag—packed and ready at all times,
much like the equipment of a fire brigade, containing my camera, lenses,
and every necessary accessory—threw it into the car, and set off
immediately.

It was nearly ten in the morning when I set off alone,
driving toward the East Peak of Hehuan Mountain. The route—taking me
through Yilan, Lishan, and Dayuling—was entirely free of traffic
lights, and I pressed on without pause, save for a brief break for lunch.
I knew that any delay would mean the sun might set before I could
reach my goal. By the time I arrived at the foot of the East Peak,
it was already close to four in the afternoon.

I hoisted my heavy gear onto my back and scrambled toward the summit;
seeing the sun still above the horizon as I reached the top, I felt
a quiet sense of relief. I quickly set up my tripod and brought out
my 617 camera—my most prized and cherished piece of equipment.Though
composing a shot through its glass viewfinder is a laborious and
time-consuming process, the precision it offers is truly irreplaceable.

I draped a black cloth over myself, held my breath in the darkness,
carefully composed the frame, loaded the film, and secured the
back—ensuring there was absolutely no light leak—before settling in
to wait for the perfect moment at sunset.Achieving the correct exposure
for this piece demanded a high level of experience and skill.
Faced with intense backlighting, I could not simply point my light
meter toward the sun; instead,

I had to turn and take a reading from the sky behind me,
then pivot back to measure the light on the ground. To prevent
direct sunlight from interfering with the meter and compromising
its accuracy, I had to shield it with my hand—a step that finally
allowed me to capture the most precise average exposure value.
As I fine-tuned the settings, my state of mind settled into a
sense of calm, born from the sheer beauty of the scene. Before me,
the dramatic sunset, the undulating mountain ranges, and the radiant,
cascading rays of light wove together to create a visual feast that
stirred the soul. This was the moment!

I pressed the shutter with a steady hand, then carefully rolled
up the precious film and tucked it away for safekeeping. As the sun
dipped below the horizon, the real challenge began. My physical
strength was all but spent,so I reached for the nutritional supplies
I’d brought along to refuel and restore my muscles, before beginning
the slow descent down the mountain under the cover of night. Back
in the car, I grabbed a quick snack and immediately set off on the
drive back to Taipei.

The night was as dark as ink, but, relying on my familiarity with
the winding mountain roads, I navigated the countless twists and
turns. It was midnight by the time I arrived home in Taipei. After
stowing away my gear,I climbed into my warm bed—feeling a touch
of exhaustion, yet profoundly content—exchanged a soft greeting
with my wife, and drifted into a deep sleep.

This photograph later earned an honorable mention in a tourism bureau
photography contest; for me, the hard work and dedication poured
into chasing the light across the vast landscape found its most
wonderful reward.
