In 1970, while I was a fifth-grade student at Changchun Elementary School in Taipei,
I visited the Taipei Zoo with my younger brother, younger sister, and cousins; the
person on the left in the photo is......my aunt (my father's sister-in-law), Lin Wang
Qiongyu, and the person on the right is my mother, Lin Lai Baozhu. My mother was very
intelligent, with a sharp mind and a decisive nature; she was a diligent worker who
managed the household with thrift and care.

Even at the age of eighty, she was able to support herself by trading stocks.
My mother's older brother graduated from Tainan Higher School—now known as National
Cheng Kung University—during the Japanese colonial period. The children of my
cousins......have all excelled academically, attending institutions such as National
Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, and National Tsing Hua
University—exclusively public universities. They have all achieved great success
in society; the younger generation includes doctors, architects, and lawyers.

My maternal grandfather served as a *Baozheng* during the Japanese colonial period.
The *Baozheng* acted as the most direct bridge of communication between the colonial
government and the Taiwanese public—a role roughly equivalent to that of a village
chief.
I used to work for the National Federation of Hotel Associations of the Republic of
China. The supervising agency was the Tourism Bureau, which in turn fell under the
Ministry of Transportation and Communications. At that time, my cousin......Lai Weimin,
served as the Chief Engineer of the Information Office at the Ministry of Transportation
and Communications.
